With this year’s theme “Free the Sea from Marine debris,” the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on its 20th anniversary of the Month of the Ocean organized a coastal cleanup activity at Brgy. Bayabas, Cagayan de Oro.
Sustainable developer Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC), developer of Primavera City and Primavera Residences was among the participants at the cleanup event together with local governments units, private sectors and community stakeholders. The cleanup initiative was aimed to help address the global ocean concern caused by plastic pollution. IDC participated as part of concerned establishments to use other alternatives to plastic objects.
“Ocean trash affects the health of wildlife, people and local economies. The trash in the water and on the coasts can be mistaken as food by wildlife and can trap animals with lethal consequences. Plastic also draws and concentrates other pollutants from encompassing seawater, posing a pollution risk to those species that then eat it. Thus we need to take conscious effort that support coastal cleanup campaigns” said Frances Galvez, Brand Manager of Italpinas Development Corporation.
IDC believes that environmental sustainability is beneficial to the habitat and its commitment to spread awareness among the community on emerging threats concerning the city’s coastal area and marine environment. It encourages its employees to take active part in green initiatives and coastal care as part of its endeavor to support its community.
“Plastics now poison all levels of our oceans from the sea surface to the seafloor and even on remote beaches. We have to do our duty clean our mess. Coast cleanup is not a glamorous event, but its environmental impact extends far beyond the cleaned surface..” said Jannicah M. Juni, IDC Marketing Officer of IDC.
